Ethan Ewing was the first casualty in Sunday's four-to-six foot conditions when he lost his men's round of 16 encounter against Seth Moniz.
Ewing was on track to reach the quarter-finals before Moniz pulled off a 8.17 ride in the dying minutes of their heat to pull off victory.
The win also ensured Moniz made the mid-season cut.
Australian wildcard George Pittar secured his spot in the quarter-finals when the first four heats of the round of 16 were surfed on Friday, and countryman Jack Robinson will be aiming to join him when he faces Brazilian Italo Ferreira on Sunday.
Four Australians are part of the women's quarter-finals, with two-time world champion Tyler Wright up against world No.1 Caitlin Simmers in a blockbuster battle.
Fitzgibbons will take on Sawyer Lindblad needing a win to avoid being relegated to the Championship Tour, while Robinson faces world No.9 Gabriela Bryan.
World No.3 Molly Picklum will be aiming to continue her strong season when she meets world No.4 Brisa Hennessy.
