The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is being rolled out by the UK Government for people who don't need a visa to enter the UK, such as those visiting for up to six months for a holiday or short-term study.
Although the official start date for Australians is yet to be announced, it will be required worldwide by the end of 2024.
British or Irish passport holders, visa-holders and people permitted to live, work or study in the UK won't need an ETA.
It costs about $19 per applicant and will be electronically linked to the passport used to apply for it.

It lasts for two years or earlier if the passport expires.
UK Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick said a strong border was a top priority for the government.
"ETAs will enhance our border security by increasing our knowledge about those seeking to come to the UK and preventing the arrival of those who pose a threat," he said.
Applications for the ETA will be made online at GOV.UK and on the UK ETA app. For information visit www.gov.uk
Decisions on applications can be expected within three working days unless further checks are needed.
The ETA is similar to the new European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) which will also come into effect for Aussies in 2024.
The ETIAS will be required for non-visa holders wanting to enter 30 European countries for a short-stay holiday.
It is valid for three years.
